Product Details

A quiet seascape with still waters at the entry of a port. It feels like sunrise, before the boats start to come and go. Oil on board, early twentieth century signed R. Duvernon (1878-1940) in the bottom right.

Raoul Duvernon (1878-1940) was an Italian painter known for his evocative landscapes, portraits, and nudes. Born in Marseille at the end of the 19th century, Duvernon pursued his artistic education at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His artistic style was heavily influenced by the rich traditions of 19th-century painting, characterized by strong tonal and chiaroscuro values.

Duvernon's works often capture the atmosphere and essence of his surroundings, particularly focusing on the landscapes and everyday life of the people around him. He married Marthe Chevalier, a talented pianist, and together they moved to Remiremont in the Vosges region. While Marthe taught piano, Raoul continued to paint and draw, producing works that reflect the serene and pastoral beauty of the region.

His pieces are known for their vibrant use of color and light, bringing to life the simple yet profound scenes of his environment. Duvernon's dedication to his craft and his ability to convey the nuances of light and shadow have cemented his reputation as a noteworthy artist of his time.
